Farouk Hossen’s story is one of drive and commitment. He pursued an applied optical education at The City College London, the capital’s leading institution, where he graduated as an Optician in 1967. He then undertook postgraduate studies in the field of Contact Lenses, working under the well-respected Professor Montague Ruben at Moorfields Eye Hospital before joining the prestigious E.B. Meyrowitz, 1A Old Bond Street, where he set up the Contact Lens Department.

Drawing on his rich and invaluable experience in London, Mr. Hossen set up practice in Mauritius, establishing Farouk Hossen Opticians in 1972. At the time, there were only three employees. Today there are 24 practices, located across Mauritius and in Rodrigues, designed with the focus on making your experience as seamless as possible.

He also embarked in the implementation of a lens surfacing production unit together with an Anti-Reflection Coating plant, based on the state-of-the art technology.

Reihaz Ismail holds a Bachelor of Optometry from the University of Durban-Westville, where he also briefly served as a lecturer in 1992. His academic foundation laid the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to both clinical excellence and leadership.

As CEO and practicing optometrist at Farouk Hossen Group since 1992, Reihaz Ismail has combined patient care with business strategy, guiding the company’s operations while ensuring high standards of service. He is skilled in fitting complex contact lenses, including keratoconic RGP and scleral lenses. He is also an active member of several professional bodies, including the Optical Association as well as Optical Council of Mauritius, where he serves on the board.

His dedication extends beyond his profession through decades of service in Rotary. He is the founding member and charter president of the Rotary Club of Montebello, and also served twice as president of the Rotary Club of Beau Bassin-Rose Hill. Through both clubs, he has led numerous initiatives to support underprivileged communities, offering free eye care and organizing impactful outreach events.
